An old sliding glass door replacement can greatly affect the look and feel of the home by enhancing the exterior and making it more appealing; energy-wise, it can conserve energy, add more security, and be more user-friendly. Of course, buying a new sliding door really pays off when the existing one is leaky, damaged, or very old.

At Best Offer Glass, our specialty is helping homeowners upgrade their homes with quality glass solutions and professionally installed products. But if you’re a skilled DIYer, below is a step-by-step guide for replacing your sliding patio door.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need:

Sliding Door Installation

  • New patio sliding door (ideally pre-assembled)
  • Power drill and screwdriver tips
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer
  • Utility knife
  • Measuring tape
  • Sealant and sealing tool
  • Shims
  • Insulation foam
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Step-by-Step Guide For Replacing Your Sliding Patio Door:

Step 1: Take the Measurement

Before you remove the old door, measure the opening’s width and height. Measure in three places every time (top, middle, bottom for width; left, center, right for height) and take the smallest measurement. This way, your new door will fit.

Tip: Note if your new door slides to the right or left. You’ll want it to match for ease and layout compatibility.

Step 2: Remove the existing door panels.

First, remove the sliding panel. Open the door and press up and out of the bottom track. If the bottom rollers don’t come out, you should replace them with a screwdriver.

Second, remove the fixed panel. It is typically secured by brackets or screws on the sides or top of the frame. Remove them using a power drill or screwdriver, then slide and lift the panel out carefully.

Step 3: Pull out the current frame.

With the utility knife, scrape off any caulking or paint from the door frame. Next, use the pry bar and hammer to gently pull the frame out of the opening. Avoid damaging the surrounding wall.

Once the frame is removed, clear out the hole of any remaining nails, insulation, or debris.

Step 4: Inspect and Ready the Opening

Make sure the start is solid and secure. Check for rot, mildew, or water damage, and make any necessary repairs before proceeding.

Insert a waterproof sill pan or flashing tape at the bottom of the opening to prevent water from entering in the future. This step is extremely important for lasting strength.

Step 5: Dry Fit the New Door

Position the new door in the opening first before gluing or screwing it in place to make sure it fits. Shims fill the door to level it and keep equal space on every side.

To check if the door is square, measure from opposite corner to opposite corner. Both readings should be equal.

Step 6: Secure the Frame.

Once the fit is satisfactory, remove the door and caulk the subfloor and sides of the rough opening. Lastly, put the door frame back into position.

Secure the frame with screws, starting at the top and bottom corners. Drive shims behind screw locations as needed to give a snug, level fit. Check alignment as you go.

Step 7: Install insulation on the frame.

Secure the door frame, then stuff low-expansion spray foam insulation into the gaps between the frame and the wall. Do not overstuff—the foam expands and will curve the frame if too much is used.

After the foam has hardened, cut off any excess using a utility knife.

Step 8: Install the Door Panels

Start by inserting the still panel into the frame. It usually fits into the top track first and then drops into position at the bottom. Hold it in place using the brackets or screws that came with it.

Then, install the working sliding panel. Raise it into the top track, then lower it onto the bottom. Level the rollers at the bottom so the door glides smoothly and closes well.

Step 9: Use Exterior Caulking

Use outside-grade caulk to fill in around the outside edge of the door frame. This will keep air and water out of your home.

Smooth the caulk with a caulking tool or your finger to give it a clean appearance. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 10: Test and Complete

Open and close the sliding door a few times to ensure smooth operation. Then, check the locks and latch to ensure proper operation.

If everything is proceeding well, put any molding or trim inside close to the door. Paint or stain it to blend with the style of your home.
